Tendo Ryu - List of Kata Tendo Ryu has a comprehensive curriculum that introduces techniques and concepts in a very logical and methodical manner. The trainee begins by learning the shodan (first step) set, which contains the crucial fundamentals of how to use one's hips, internal core muscles, breathing, and footwork while using the naginata. Without these fundamentals, it is not possible to become proficient. Learning the curriculum of Tendo Ryu is not about collecting kata simply to say one knows a certain amount of techniques. Rather, the key to Tendo Ryu is about coordinating the body to move as efficiently as possible while maximising the effectiveness of the weapon. This is not something that can be learnt quickly or easily, and in fact some trainees never do. However, it is this challenge which keeps the student of Tendo Ryu coming back for more, knowing that he or she can always improve if determined to do so.
